However, it could be broken with cannon fire. A square formation was the single most effective tactic used by infantry of all nations present in the Napoleonic Wars to combat cavalry. Drums being sounded amid cavalry charging across the battlefield, lancers crushing soldiers that are unlucky to have not been placed in a square formation.
